For 2020, an entirely new design extends this tradition with innovative technologies and class-leading aerodynamics. From its bolder grille and all-LED lighting to its standard 19-inch wheels and integrated rear spoiler, the new GLE SUV's sporty style reflects its agile moves. New options include 64-color ambient lighting, a 50% larger Panorama roof, power-adjustable 2nd-row seats, and new 3rd-row seating.A new 255-hp 2.0L inline-4 turbo engine combines numerous advances to deliver more power from less fuel. Its rapid-multispark ignition and high-pressure Direct Injection can fine-tune themselves every few milliseconds to optimize performance, efficiency and emissions. An intercooled twin-scroll turbocharger and CAMTRONIC variable valve lift help deliver all of the engine's 273 lb-ft of torque from just 1,800 rpm, for vigorous response when taking off, merging or passing. An ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations, to save fuel and reduce emissions. As soon as the driver lifts off the brake, the engine instantly restarts, for quick acceleration response. The ECO Start/Stop system can also be shut off by the driver at any time. With a greater range of ratios and shorter steps between gears, the 9-speed automatic changes gears more quickly yet more smoothly. Along with a more seamless delivery of power, the lighter, more versatile transmission enhances quiet riding comfort and fuel-efficiency. The electronic selector and shift paddles let you control all gear changes with your hands on the steering wheel. And drivers can vary the shift modes via the innovative DYNAMIC SELECT system. A multimode drive program selector on the console lets you dial in the vehicle's performance character to suit your needs or your mood. DYNAMIC SELECT offers three preset modes: ECO, Comfort and Sport, plus an Individual mode you can configure a la carte. Each mode adapts the throttle response, shift programming, ESP and more. Models with AIRMATIC(R) suspension also adapt the damping rate in the various modes.Power front seats feature intuitive, seat-shaped controls on the door, plus a 4-way power lumbar support for the driver. To set and save your ideal driving position, a memory system for the driver seat recalls three stored positions for the seat, plus the positions of the 4-way power steering column and side mirrors. Electrically heated front seats quickly take the chill out of even the coldest day. Three levels of warming automatically step down after several minutes to the lowest setting.Radar-based technology can alert you if you're approaching a vehicle ahead, or even some stationary objects, at a speed and distance that suggest a collision is likely. As soon as you start to brake, it can automatically provide an appropriate level of braking to help prevent a collision or reduce its severity. If you fail to respond, it can also initiate braking automatically at a range of driving speeds. The system can also detect and react to crossing pedestrians at typical city speeds. The first system of its kind, ATTENTION ASSIST(R) continuously monitors up to 70 parameters of driving behavior, and can automatically alert the driver with both visual and audible warnings if it detects signs of drowsiness on long trips.
